Let’s actually bring the entire story back.
Before you saw the Mike Vestil that you see right now..
Traveling around the world, having a lot of fun, and being able to create positive emotions in myself without depending on any external force just because I know that I already have everything that I need inside to make myself happy..
There was a moment in my life where the setpoint of who I was as a person and the traits that I was normally feeling was just filled with distress.
Probably some of you who are reading this right now can resonate with that idea.
Maybe you don’t know what to do with your life and you feel stuck, lost, confused, and you have no idea what action steps to take.
At most times, this depression is crippling and overwhelming you..
It crushes your soul like the way it did to mine.
Which is why today’s topic aims to help you break out of that funk.
LET ME BEGIN WITH A STORY
When I was younger, I had a lot of pressure from my family.
Everyone’s telling me to be somebody that I necessarily was not (to be a dentist and finish school as a licensed dentist).
It overwhelms me that I felt stuck, lost, and scared because if I’d just be honest to myself..
The truth is, I didn’t really know if that’s really what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I don’t feel like that path resonates within me.
Which is why I felt so sad and depressed thinking about whatthinking what my life would actually be when I fast-forward 10 to 20 years down the road.
WellWell somehow, since it’s “college,” I can’t deny the fact that being a teenager still counts as one of the thrillings (if not the best) four years of my life!
But then after that is just downhill. The depression was insane and it was crippling me.
Sometimes, I won’t even go out to see friends. And even if I do, I’ll just drink and sit there in a depressed funk not knowing what to do because deep inside, I feel so alone.
NOT UNTIL I FOUND THESE 5 SIMPLE STEPS
I literally had no idea how to pull myself out of that depressive state.
But not until I actually figured out the following five simple things.
And here’s the biggest thing guys..
It doesn’t matter how depressed you are..
It doesn’t matter what you’re currently going through.
You’re going to be able to not only allow yourself to create these positive emotions, but you are going to get out of the depression and into the life that you know that you were meant to live!
Let’s take a look at these five simple steps!
#1 DEFINE WHAT DEPRESSION IS
Let us first define what depression really is all about.
Depression is just stagnant energy.
That’s all it is! Someone who has energy that is stagnant.
The moment that you realize this, that’s when you can actually get out of depression.
Given the definition, first things first..
USE THAT ENERGY AND GET MOVING!
As for me, I was too busy focusing on the future regarding what I want to do when I grow up in order to make my parents proud so that I can live a happy and fulfilling life and be able to position myself around amazing people.
I was so focused on the result when I should have been more focused on the process.
It’s the same when you play sports.
Sometimes you’re not even thinking (like when you’re shooting a ball) because of the fact that you’re using that energy that you normally would think to actually be in the process of just doing the thing that you’re doing.
Consider snowboarding for example..
When I was younger, I didn’t necessarily think of the end goal of making it down the hill.
All I cared about was just effortlessly gliding through the snow and making sure that I was just thrown into the present.
When you’re thrown into the present moment, you don’t necessarily have the time to consciously think because your subconscious mind takes over.
That’s the first step to actually get out of depression.
The fastest way is to just get moving because in the same space in your body, happiness and gratitude cannot exist where there’s fear.
Both cannot co-exist..
Fear and gratitude. Fear and hope. Positive emotions and negative emotions can’t co-exist.
The thing about depression is, it’s a negative emotion and it’s stagnant.
But if you move that energy around, you’ll realize that you don’t really think about it much.
And sometimes, even though you might be depressed at a certain point..
There are times where you might either be so much in a process or you might get lost in a conversation. .
Or you might just watch a good movie and laugh and then you realize, ‘holy crap! I forgot I was depressed..’
And when they were reminded that they were depressed, they’re like, ‘oh no! I have to be depressed again.’
It’s so weird! And that’s how stagnant energy works.
That’s why I have some friends who when they were depressed, they literally got into dancing. And then they were no longer depressed.
Because when you’re dancing and you’re out of your head and into your heart and into your body, you no longer have the time and the bandwidth to actually think of your depression and then you forget it!
#2 PROPER NOURISHMENT
For this, I’m not talking about vitamin C, D or E.
I’m talking about three simple things:
First is getting clean oxygen into your system.
Next is getting enough sunlight, specifically at day time when you wake up.
Sit or stand there for 30 minutes.
I remember when I was working a lot when I lived in Ubud all the way up in the north of Bali..
I realized I didn’t even see the sun because I was always working on my computer and I was wondering why I got this feeling of anxiety and depression.
It’s because I didn’t even went out of my place to witness the sunrise and bask in its heat.
The third that I want to highlight is drinking high-quality water, particularly alkaline water.
Once you start to nourish your body, it allows you to actually start feeling better.
#3 LEARN TO STILL YOUR MIND
You might think that this has somehow contradicted the first thing that I said, which is to get moving.
Let’s take a look at it this way..
Sometimes, when we are so much into our issues and anxieties in life, our thoughts tend to speed up so much.
Back when I was younger, I used to bother myself so much about the future.
I got what I was hoping for: anxiety and depression.
Here’s the biggest thing guys, when you live too much in the past or to the future instead of the now, you get trapped on those two timelines.
What helped was when I learned how to still my mind and pull me back to the present moment where anxiety and depression cannot co-exist.
Allow me to share with you the three things that literally helped me still my mind:
1. Wim Hof Method
I learned how to trick my mind to shift back into the present by actually getting into the cold water.
Because think about this guys, when you’re freezing, believe me, you don’t have time to think about your problems!
2. Breath Work
If you’ve done any type of breath work, I’d definitely recommend it 100% because of the fact that you’re so focused on the process of breathing, you forget about your problems as well.
What happens is, it just throws a bunch of oxygen into your system.
I made a bunch of videos about meditation, you can check it out below!
Remember this guys, the future and the past doesn’t exist, all that exists is now.
Let me tell you a quick story..
When I went to the Philippines and I saw a four year old kid with no shoes, no home, starving and had no idea where he was gonna get food next..
He had no parents and just living on the street, something struck inside me.
Now here’s the thing about depression, it’s all relative.
And if you realize that there are people out there that are in worse situations than you but are still able to be happy..
It almost makes you wonder and admit that we actually have no excuse to be depressed when there are people in third-world countries that are starving.
They don’t have access to the internet..
They have no idea where they’re gonna sleep tonight or where they’re gonna get the next meal.
Then you realize, ‘holy crap! I’m complaining about all these things that don’t actually necessarily matter and I’m just having these first world problems because..’
Or ‘oh, that girl doesn’t like me.. my business isn’t working.. this person said this thing and it was very mean..’
And there are people out there that are freaking starving.
It doesn’t make any sense.
Now when you travel, you start realizing that ‘holy crap! My problems that I thought are big are actually nothing at all!’
Which leads me to the fifth step on how to get rid of depression forever..
#5 CREATE A COMPELLING VISION 5-10 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD
Create a compelling vision of what you want to do with your life five, tenfive ten years down the road.
What is it that you want to do?
Where is it that you want to go?
Who is the person that you want to become?
What are the relationships that you want to have?
This is something that actually helped me a lot when I was 18 years old and I had no idea what to do.
The fact is, I didn’t have access to a cold plunge pool like I now have where I could get into two degrees Celsius water.
I didn’t have access to traveling but all I did was having access to a compelling vision of what I wanted my life to be.
Everything that I’m living right now was what I wrote down on a piece of paper when I was 18.
Holding that piece of paper with my written vision on it, I told myself that no matter what happens, I’m willing to die for it!
That moment, the depression and something that feels like veils of the darkness has lifted.
It all started off realizing that depression was merely stagnant energy.
And when I found a compelling vision of what I actually wanted my life to be, the stagnant energy started moving and I started getting focused.
I started getting motivated and realizing, ‘hey! I could actually sit here and be this pity party and blame myself for nothing..
Or I could actually go out there and create the thing that I wrote down on this piece of paper!’
Sometimes, you might not have the resources to travel.
You might not have the resources to do some of the things that I talked about but what you do have is..
As long as you have a mind and you’re reading this, and you have a pen and paper, what I would definitely recommend you to do is sit down and have a conversation with yourself on what is the most compelling vision of what you want your life to be five years down the road.
When you put that down, write it in present tense.
When I wrote down my vision when I was 18, I didn’t say that ‘I want this or I want that..’
Here’s what I said..
- I am traveling the world.
- I’m positively grateful for all the amazing friends that have in my life.
- I’m so happy that I am living my dream life.
- I’m so happy that I have the body that I want.
- I’m so grateful that more and more money is coming into my bank account in the exceeding amounts of quantities with high-level quantities whenever I wanted to.
When I wrote down the exact same person that I wanted to be, it was the moment that the depression was lifted and I realized that man..
This feeling of negativity now sucks!
But it’s only temporary.
As long as I have the hope and understand that if there are people out there living the life that I’m living the same as what I wrote on this piece of paper, then what’s stopping me?
Allow me to end this blog with this question…
What’s stopping you?
